Khorramshahr; symbol of resistance and victory
Posted by Ali Sanaei under Geography, History and Archeology, Iran, Iraq, Middle East, War and Military
Khorramshahr was returned to where it belonged at 24th May 1982, during Iran-Iraq war. The city was captured by Iraqi forces at 26th October 1980 and after 578 days Iranian’s succeeded on taking it back by the 25 day “Beit-ul-Mogaddas” operation. This was a huge event and a true symbol of victory, as Iran was not only facing Iraq but a world of enemies who were continuously feeding and supporting Iraq (USA, USSR, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Czech, Denmark, Canada, Brazil, Saudi, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, UAE, etc and etc).

I wish I had time to write more about Khorramshahr, but it’s 3:37am and I really need to go to bed! So, I’ll just give you a very brief history of Khorramshahr according to Lexicorient and then a link to an article on Tehran Times, which I found very interesting, hopefully you will too.

Khorramshahr’s History:
331 BCE: Reports of a port on the premises of the future Khorramshahr.
Around 750 CE: The town is named Mohammerah.
1837: Attacked and demolished by the Ottomans.
1847: Mohammerah comes under Persian control, even if it had autonomy under a local shaykh.
1908: Oil is discovered in the region of Mohammerah and Abadan, bringing swift growth and prosperity to the two cities.
1924: Reza Pahlavi takes the control of Mohammerah out of the hands of the local shaykh, and puts it under full Persian control, and renames it Khorramshahr.
1940’s: Khorramshahr is connected with the Trans-Iranian Railway by a branch line to Ahvaz.
1980: Is captured by Iraq during the Iran-Iraq War. Almost all of the population flees. In 1976 the number of inhabitants had been 140,000.
1982 May: Recaptured by Iran.
1990’s: The port, and large parts of the centre is rebuilt. Many of the former inhabitants return.
Article: Khorramshahr, symbol of resistance and victory
Hossein, a worker at the Khorramshahr Port and Shipping Organization, and his wife Zahra were preparing their children Ali and Ahmad for school. It was the first day of school. Overwhelmed with joy, the brothers were walking to their school in the city center … read more (the complete article)

Why Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, UAE and Jordan??? aren’t they Muslims?! can’t they understand what happened with Saddam?! he shacked hands with a neocon during the war and got kicked by the same guy four years ago! Those Sunni and corrupt states have shacked hands with Israel today and have begun killing Shia’s … they’ve always been the same since the beginning of Islam. Ahmadinejad goes to UAE and calls them our brothers, I consider them as traitor and worse than our enemies.
why aren’t they re-building khorramshahr if the city is this important?
God liberated Khorramshahr
God bless Iran and its troops … I’m not Iranian but I love them
why didn’t Iran finish the war after recapturing Khorramshahr?
lidaa
because, Iraq wouldn’t stop, US, Soviot Union, UK, Saudi and alllll those other countries wouldn’t stop.
think, it is very simple!
I agree with tareq, let’s all see, has the world stopped? we’re still threatend by them to be attacked!
there isn’t any third country left in the region (thx 2 US!) to attack Iran, otherwise we can all be sure that we were in a war right now, I mean in a military war.
Javad (1st commet):
UAE, Jordan and Saudi are not our worst enemies, let’s face it, they are not even an enemy, if US and UK get out of the region.
for thousands of years, it has been foreigners messing up the countries’ relations with junky issues!
For Iran, nothing is more important to reunite the Muslim countries, including countries such as Qatar and Egypt. In my opinion this is a right policy.
but there were some countries helping Iran as well, ha? like North Korea and Libya
yes, but how can u campare n korea n libya with us, ussr, uk, france, germany and all those others?
yes, but Iran had some weapons from china as well
@Pedram
Let’s try to strengthen our relationship with the Arabs and pretend to have no problems with them while they arm the Sunni insurgents in Iraq in order to kill the Shia’s??!!
it will be much better if we’d tighten our relationship with Chavez who is fighting Imperialism instead of calling the Arabs who have given into Imperialism to gain wealth and short term stability in their countries.
Who knows, it might be the Latin Americans who might help us during a warfare… they’re closer to US. Also our so called brothers spend billions to arm themselves against Iran’s rising power in the ME.
I go for freedom fighters in Latin America not for the Arabs… that’s just what I believe in.
Javad;
I was always thinkin why on earth is Iran makin relations with countries such as venezuela and cuba! I never thought that they may help us in case Iran and US go into a war. you made a very interesting point and answered my question. thank you.
relation with other countries is like having a relation with a house neigbour or a friend. sometimes you forgive and forget things.
Iran should act really like the big brother or older person (in the good way) and forgive SOME of what they’ve done in past.
For few decades Iran tried to make relation with western countires, with no success and just losing the time and its resources. I see it a good thing that now Iran’s foreign policy has switched to making relation with under development countries and countries which are suffering from imperialism. In hard days, they are going to be the ones which will help us. yes, not all of them, but many of them.
the only country who is claiming on Iran’s land is UAE.
trust me people, if they had the power and ability to attack Iran, they would. How can they be our friend?
u guys have all 4gotten the main artcle topic, haha.
keep it cool, just celebrate the Khorramshahr’s liberation for a while.
is iran geting bomb nuclear?
Daniel4Persia your right I forgot the main subject. May all the martyrs who recaptured khorramshahr with gods help rest in peace.
And Ali thanks for your nice topics… bring ‘em on!
God bless them all, and also the present soldeirs of our beloved country, Iran.
