Iran’s nuclear negotiator

Posted by Ali Sanaei under Ahmadinejad, Iran, Middle East, Politics

It was a complete surprise for me at the first hearing Ali Larijani has resigned from his position. He served pretty well during these two and half years as Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary. Apparently he gave his resignation letter two weeks before its official approval by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and press announcements. However, the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appointed him to the security council in 2004 for a three-year term. So he is Ayatollah Khamenei’s representative in the council anyway, but not the secretary any more.
I thought we’ll know what is precisely going on his resignation sooner, but now that there hasn’t been any official explanations, we still have to hypothesize.

1- As it is somehow an open secret; Larijani has had some differences with Ahmadinejad over how to proceed over the nuclear programme in details.
2- Ali Larijani’s mission is done by this part, and now Iran is setting a new political figure to continue the path.
3- This might be part of Iran’s strategy in this point to kill some time.
4- Larijani has some personal/family issues.
5- Larijani is getting ready for another significant role in the Iranian government.

I personally like the fifth prediction more than others. Ali Larijani is a very close follower of Ayatollah Khamenei, he is a conservative, very loyal to the regime and a logic character at the same time, which the latter is very liked by every one, even reformists.

The fact is that Iran’s Economical situation is not very good at the moment. The sanctions and pressures on Iran are now mostly economical and has caused some difficulties. Maybe Ayatollah Khamenei (or President Ahmadinejad) will appoint him to a new mission in this theme.

The other possible position could be membership of the parliament, as he will have a high chance to become parliament chairman afterwards.

Last but not least: In the past few days western -especially US and UK ‘analysts’ have produced ridiculous commentaries, but they must be assured that Iran’s policy has not shifted on its nuclear programme. The new negotiator, Saeed Jalili and Larijani presence in yesterday’s talks with Solana has given this message clearly.

Mr. Bahonar himself said that the cooperation of Ahmadinejad and Larijani was not possible anymore. Which exactly shows their disagreement in fundamental of nuclear negotiation. Also, ahmadinejad said that he nominated 3 persons to Mr. Khamenei for this position, Hashemi Samare, Rahim Moshayi, and Jalili and Mr. Khamenei picked Jalili. Again, the candidates for the position, shows that Ahmadinejad is pushing Mr. Khamenei to pick between bad and worse. Obviously non of them was Mr Khamenei’s first choice.

    Hamid, don’t be so naive!
The secretary is officially appointed by the president not by Mr. Khamenei.
Larijani is still a member of the council. The candidates you mentioned were just guesses by the media.
Mr. Khamenei’s power on such issues is extraordinary, when required.

yes,we know, whoever gets in charge, iran is after nuclear bombs anyway.

and then again another top comment by kylie…well done kylie…u ‘almost’ know everything…but cud u tell me who are “WE”, when u say “WE KNOW WHOEVER GETS IN CHARGE…….”. Plus also tell me how u know bout all these things!!!

anyways i really like ur one-line negative comments all though this weblog…im pretty much sure they are so well-though of in advance;) no sarcasm btw :D

because iran is after nuke bombs.if theyre not, why cant they prove it to the world?when people say something, there is something!

  7. Alireza Sanaei |

hi again Ms. know it all!!!
without no logical reason u again saying that iran is after bomb!!! lol…and ur reason is that: “when ppl say something, theres something”…lol…
who are these ppl?! maybe ppl in the US under da influence of da manipulated media may say so!!! but a much bigger percentage of ppl across da world including inside da US itself believe that this is da certain rite of iran to use atomic energy and that they aint after bomb…so based on da logic u used: WHEN PPL SAY SOMETHING, THERES SOMETHING, rite?!;) im just speakin ur language :D

one more thing…u say if they aint after bomb why they cant prove it…but da story is quite opposite…da problem is that no one can prove that iran is after bomb and IAEA has not also found any sign that iran is looking for such a thing, and their last report has rather been so positive…so its like when a specialist Dr says: “ok da patient is fine now, he can go.”, and then some random guy in da corridor of hospital shout:”nah nah, dont let him go…we think hes still sick.”…hahaha…again another understandable example for u mate :)

    no think and judge ;)

Alireza, I loved your Doctor example! Nice one.
And to add to you first paragraph; what Kylie thinks as “people” saying something, is not actually people, is few western governments’ propaganda fooling their people.
The media strategy in US and est to bomb the mass with lots and lots … and lots of news and data to make them confused and then eventually fooling their own people. Kylie seems to be stuck in such traps…

i wander y the whole world was supporting irans atomic program b4 the revolotion and now theyve suddenly turned against it!

  11. Jimy Jim |

IF IRAN IS AFTER “PEACEFULL” NUCLEAR ENERGY, WHY DID THEY HIDE IT FOR MANY YEAR? WHY DO THEY STILL HAVE SECRET SITES? YOU CAN FIND THIS IS IAEA’S REPORT.

    - Larijani knows nothing about economics, he’s just a well-skilled talking person!
    - Parliament is too small for him now.

count-down of the cleric regime’s collapse has started.

It doesn’t matter whether Iran is building nuclear weapons or not, it is nobody’s business but their own, after all they have signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. India, Pakistan, Israel, and North Korea are the only non signatories, yet they all have nuclear weapons and with the exception of N Korea, no one bothers them.

You have to say though, Iran doesn’t help themselves. They seem to be trying to give the US an excuse to attack them. If they really are not building nuclear weapons (and I don’t think that they are - yet), then why not just pick a nation, say Luxembourg to be their inspectors and give them carte blanche access to all their nuclear facilities? They wouldn’t lose face or be giving in (after all they have nothing to hide). Then the US wouldn’t have a leg to stand on. Instead Iran is going out of its way to appear shifty.

Irans president has announced his invitation twice in the UN askin other countries to get involved in Irans nuclear program and attend in the tenders, etc. this means that Iran’s nuclear program is clear enough to let other countries participate in it. if you dont agree with this nopeoblem: IAEA has inspected Irans nuclear sites more than 3000 person/hour in the recent 4 years. this is a massive time. they have reported no single outrage in any of their reports. UNs IAEA keeps saying there is no evidence of any nuclear bomb but america, england, france, germany keep saying, no iran is after bomb and we cant trust them.

  16. Parsa |

I completely agree with this above comment. In fact, iran has done all it has been able to convince the world that its only after Peaceful Nuclear Energy.
Non-Aligned Movement countries have all officially declared that they recognise Iran’s right to have nuclear energy and agree that its current programme is only for peacefull reasons. NAM has 55% of world population with its 118 members. They haven’t declared this once but many times, actually each time they have a general meeting.
Western governments know this well, but are after something else. They’re worried of Iran’s revolutionary movement of independency and anti-imperialism…

Maybe Ali Larijani wants to become a presidential candidate for the 2009 elections. By the way it looks so stupid when both of them (larijani and the new guy) stand together in front of solana.

No he won’t challenge Ahmadinejad. He will actually support him. He may give it a go on 2013!
